Caring for cotton clothing in Nairobi's climate

Hard water, strong sun and dusty commutes are tough on clothes. These habits keep tees, shirts and chinos looking new for longer.

Wash cold, wash less

Most cotton does not need a hot wash. Cold water keeps colours bright and prevents shrinkage. Air out worn-once items instead of washing them every time.

Turn dark colours inside out

Navy and black fade fastest where the fabric rubs against other clothes and the drum. Turning garments inside out protects the visible side.

Dry in the shade

Nairobi sun is strong, especially from October to March. Hanging clothes in direct sun bleaches colours and can make cotton brittle. A shaded, breezy spot dries almost as fast.

Hard water and detergent

Water in many estates is hard, which leaves detergent residue and makes fabric feel stiff. Use a little less detergent than the packet suggests and run an extra rinse if your machine allows it.

Storing

Fold heavy knits and hoodies rather than hanging them so the shoulders do not stretch. Hang shirts and dresses on shaped hangers. Make sure everything is completely dry before it goes into a wardrobe to avoid musty smells during the long rains.
